Sodium based bentonite composite waterproof blanket (GCL) is a new type of geosynthetic material. It is a blanket shaped waterproof roll made by mixing graded natural sodium based bentonite particles and corresponding additives as raw materials, and fixing the bentonite particles between geotextiles and plastic woven fabrics through needle punching technology and equipment. Bentonite waterproof blanket not only possesses all the characteristics of geotechnical materials, but also has excellent waterproof (permeability) performance.
The waterproof mechanism is as follows: the sodium based particle bentonite selected for the bentonite waterproof blanket can expand more than 24 times in contact with water, forming a uniform colloidal system with high viscosity and low filtration loss. Under the restriction of two layers of geotextiles, the bentonite changes from disordered to ordered expansion. The continuous water absorption expansion results in the bentonite layer achieving compactness and thus having a waterproof effect

Installation Instructions
1. Bentonite waterproof blanket material has a relatively large self weight and should be transported and laid using a shovel loader.
2. The connection of bentonite waterproof blanket material is done by overlapping.
3. When laying bentonite waterproof blankets on slopes greater than 10%, the number of overlaps along the slope length direction should be minimized as much as possible. The bentonite pad on the slope must exceed the foot line of the slope by more than 1500mm. D. We will strictly follow the design drawings for laying the bentonite waterproof blanket submitted to the supervising engineer, unless required by the owner or supervisor.
4. Any equipment used for laying bentonite waterproof blankets must not be driven on top of geosynthetic materials that have already been laid. When installing bentonite waterproof blankets, the outdoor air temperature should not be lower than 0 ºC or higher than 40 ºC.
5. All exposed edges of bentonite waterproof blankets must be immediately compressed with sandbags or other heavy objects to prevent them from being blown by the wind or pulled out of the surrounding anchoring ditch. Bentonite waterproof blankets should not be unfolded in windy weather to prevent them from being blown up by the wind.
6. The laying method of bentonite waterproof blanket must ensure direct contact between the bentonite waterproof blanket and the underlying foundation to eliminate wrinkles. Any wrinkling, folding, or arching may cause the same situation to occur in other geotechnical materials of the soil layer. To avoid wrinkling, folding, and arching, we will eliminate these problems by re laying, cutting, and repairing the bentonite waterproof blanket according to the technical specifications.
7. The equipment for bentonite waterproof blankets must be approved by the supervising engineer before use, and unprotected razors or "quick knives" are not allowed. The construction equipment that may damage the bentonite blanket cannot directly act on it. A feasible laying method is to push the soil backwards and spread the bentonite blanket at the front end of the suspended bulldozer. If the excavator leaves car marks on the foundation soil, it should be restored to its original state before the laying work continues.
8. When laying bentonite blankets, try to minimize the dragging of the bentonite blanket on the foundation to avoid damage to the contact surface between the bentonite blanket and the ground. If necessary, a temporary geotextile can be placed on the ground to reduce damage caused by friction during the laying process of the bentonite blanket.
9. The laying and overlapping of bentonite blankets should be parallel to the direction of slope inclination. If the slope is greater than 4:1, the bentonite blankets cannot have horizontal overlapping within 1 meter from the top or slope. The overlapping method of bentonite waterproof blankets is to overlap the ends of two bentonite blankets. To prevent loose soil or crushed stones from entering the overlapping area.
